    Leaf segmentation and tracking using probabilistic parametric active contours

    Active contours or snakes are widely used for segmentation and tracking. These techniques require the minimization of an energy function, which is generally a linear combination of a data fit term and a regularization term. This energy function can be adjusted to exploit the intrinsic object and image features. This can be done by changing the weighting parameters of the data fit and regularization term. There is, however, no rule to set these parameters optimally for a given application. This results in trial and error parameter estimation. In this paper, we propose a new active contour framework defined using probability theory. With this new technique there is no need for ad hoc parameter setting, since it uses probability distributions, which can be learned from a given training dataset

    Combinatorial Methods for Enumerating Maps in Surfaces of Arbitrary Genus

    The problem of map enumeration is one that has been studied intensely for the past half century. Early work on this subject included the works of Tutte for various types of rooted planar maps and the works of Brown for non-planar maps. Furthermore, the works of Bender, Canfield, and Richmond as well as Bender and Gao give asymptotic results for the enumeration of various types of maps. This subject also attracted the attention of physicists when they independently discovered that map enumeration can be applied to quantum field theory. The results of 't Hooft established the connection between matrix integration and map enumeration, which allowed algebraic techniques to be used. Other examples of this application can be found in the papers of Itzykson and Zuber. One result of particular significance is the Harer-Zagier formula, which gives the genus series for maps with one vertex. This result has been proved many times in the literature, a selection of which includes the proofs of Goulden and Nica, Itzykson and Zuber, Jackson, Kerov, Kontsevich, Lass, Penner, and Zagier. An extension of this result to locally orientable maps on one vertex can be found in Goulden and Jackson, while another extension to two vertex maps can be found in Goulden and Slofstra. In this thesis, we will extend the combinatorial techniques used in the papers of Goulden and Nica and Goulden and Slofstra, so that they can be applied to maps with an arbitrary number of vertices, when the graph being embedded is a tree with loops and multiple edges. This involves defining a new set of combinatorial objects that extends the ones used in Goulden and Slofstra, and develop new techniques for handling these objects. Furthermore, we will simplify some of the techniques and results in the existing literature. Finally, we seek to relate the techniques used in this thesis to techniques in other map enumeration problems, and briefly discuss the potential of applying our techniques to those problems

    Transport spectroscopy in a time-modulated open quantum dot

    We have investigated the time-modulated coherent quantum transport phenomena in a ballistic open quantum dot. The conductance GG and the electron dwell time in the dots are calculated by a time-dependent mode-matching method. Under high-frequency modulation, the traversing electrons are found to exhibit three types of resonant scatterings. They are intersideband scatterings: into quasibound states in the dots, into true bound states in the dots, and into quasibound states just beneath the subband threshold in the leads. Dip structures or fano structures in GG are their signatures. Our results show structures due to 2ω\hbar\omega intersideband processes. At the above scattering resonances, we have estimated, according to our dwell time calculation, the number of round-trip scatterings that the traversing electrons undertake between the two dot openings.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    AbstractA 50-year-old Chinese lady presented with subacute onset of dyspnoea, bilateral infiltrates on chest X-ray and type I respiratory failure. There were minor symptoms of arthralgia and myalgia. Subsequent investigations confirmed that she had organizing pneumonia, polymyositis and serum anti-Jo-1 antibody. Treatment with corticosteroids resulted in prompt improvement of the respiratory condition and myositis

    Wintertime CO2 Emission from Soils of Northeastern Siberia

    The emission of C02 from northeastern Siberian soil was estimated for the period December 1989 to February 1990. Concentrations of air CO2 near the ground and 1 m above the snow cover were measured by an infrared gas analyzer. Fluxes of CO2 across the snow cover were calculated from the differences of these two values and the predetermined CO2 transfer coefficients at various flux rates through a layer of snow. Temperature and moisture content of the soil profiles were also observed simultaneously. The average transfer coefficient of CO2 for packed snow measured in the winter of 1989/90 was about 0.28 sq. cm/s. This value was used to estimate the average CO2 flux from soil: 0.26 g C/sq. m/day in December 1989, 0.13 g C/sq. m/day in January 1990 and 0.07 g C/sq. m/day in February 1990. Thus a minimal total of about 13.8 g C/sq. m had been released from the tundra soil during the 90 days from December 1989 to February 1990. Using the study by Kelley et al. (1968) and assuming that the minimal CO2 transfer coefficient is also applicable for the entire tundra and Northern Taiga zones between September and June, the total emission from this region would amount to 0.23 x 10**15 g of carbon. The main source of this CO2 probably originated from microbial oxidation of soil organic matter. This assertion is supported by the existence of a relatively warm layer in the frozen soil at 40-120 cm depth. This warm layer was about 10-40 C higher than the ambient air, or about 5-10 C higher than the soil surface, and its moisture content was also higher than the surrounding layers.Key words: CO2 flux, Siberian tundra, soil temperature, moisture contentOn a évalué l'émission de CO2 provenant du sol dans le nord-est sibérien, durant la période allant de décembre 1989 à février 1990. On a mesuré les concentrations du CO2 ambiant près du sol et à 1 m de la couverture de neige, à l'aide d'un analyseur de gaz infrarouge. On a calculé les flux du CO2 à travers le couvert nival à partir des différences de ces deux valeurs et des coefficients de transfert du CO2 prédéterminés pour divers taux de flux à travers une couche de neige. On a aussi observé simultanément la température et la teneur en humidité des profils pédologiques. Le coefficient de transfert moyen du CO2 pour la neige tassée mesuré durant l'hiver de 1989-90 était d'environ 0,28 cm²/s. Cette valeur a servi à estimer le flux moyen du CO2 provenant du sol: 0,26 g C/m²/jour en décembre 1989, 0,13 g C/m²/jour en janvier 1990 et 0,07 g C/m²/jour en février 1990. Par conséquent, un total minimal d'environ 13,8 g C/m² a été libéré du sol de la toundra au cours des 90 jours allant de décembre à février 1990. En nous servant de l'étude menée précédemment par Kelley et al. (1968) et en supposant que le coefficient minimal de transfert du CO2 s'applique aussi à l'ensemble des zones de toundra et de taïga septentrionale entre septembre et juin, l'émission totale provenant de cette région se monterait à 0,23 x 10**15 g de carbone. La source principale de ce CO2 venait probablement de l'oxydation microbienne de la matière organique contenue dans le sol. Cette assertion est soutenue par l'existence d'une couche de température relativement élevée dans le sol gelé, qui se trouve de 40 à 120 cm de profondeur.     Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition in type 2, diabetic patients – interaction with ACE insertion/deletion polymorphism

    Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion(I)/deletion (D) polymorphism may modify the effect of inhibition of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) on survival and cardiorenal outcomes in type 2, diabetes. A consecutive cohort of 2089 Chinese type 2 diabetic patients with mean (±standard deviation) age of 59.7±13.1 years were genotyped for this polymorphism by polymerase chain reaction method and were followed prospectively for a median period of 44.6 (interquartile range: 23.7, 57.5) months. Clinical outcomes, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular and renal end points, were examined. The frequency for I allele was 67.1 and 32.9% for D allele, with observed genotype frequencies of 45.8, 42.6, and 11.6% for 3, DI and DD, respectively. ACE DD polymorphism was an independent predictor for renal end point with hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval) of 1.72 (1.16, 2.56), but not for cardiovascular end point or mortality. After controlling for confounding factors, including ACE I/D genotype, the usage of RAAS inhibitors was associated with reduced risk of mortality (HR 0.34 (0.23, 0.50)) and renal end point (HR 0.55 (0.40, 0.75)). On subgroup analysis, the beneficial effects on survival (II vs DI vs DD: HR 0.29 (0.16, 0.51) vs 0.25 (0.14, 0.46) vs 1.33 (0.41, 4.31)) and renoprotection (II vs DI vs DD: 0.52 (0.30, 0.90) vs 0.43 (0.25, 0.72) vs 0.95 (0.43, 2.12)) were most evident in II and DI carriers. In conclusion, inhibition of RAAS was associated with reduced risk of mortality and occurrence of renal end point in Chinese type 2 diabetic patients. These benefits were most evident among II and DI carriers

    A second look at the toric h-polynomial of a cubical complex

    We provide an explicit formula for the toric hh-contribution of each cubical shelling component, and a new combinatorial model to prove Clara Chan's result on the non-negativity of these contributions. Our model allows for a variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result on the gg-polynomial of the cubical lattice, this variant may be shown by simple inclusion-exclusion. We establish an isomorphism between our model and Chan's model and provide a reinterpretation in terms of noncrossing partitions. By discovering another variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result in the work of Denise and Simion, we find evidence that the toric hh-polynomials of cubes are related to the Morgan-Voyce polynomials via Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials.Comment: Minor correction
